what type of martial arts will i learn here?
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (bjj)Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a ground-based grappling technique that involves the use of joint locks and chokeholds. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) promotes the concept that a smaller person can successfully defend themselves against a bigger, stronger, and heavier assailant by using proper technique and leverage. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is one of the best martial arts for self-defense because it teaches you how to use your body as leverage to properly defend against a bigger opponent.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
I've never done this before... what class should I start with?
We recommend starting with a standard Muay Thai class, an Intro to BJJ class or for women, the Womens Only class it great. Avoid taking any of the competition focused classes and Open Mat until you have some experience under your belt. (see schedule page)
You can start with any class you're interested in. Most people think that they're going to be thrown into an MMA fight their first day and that's NEVER the case... even with experienced folks. For most of our classes, people work in pairs. The instructor will either pair you with himself during the class to teach you fundamentals or he will pair you with someone experienced enough to help you through each drill. You never have to do anything you're not comfortable with and remember... EVERY student you see in that class with you started in the exact same place as you.

Could you give me an example of what taking a class is like?
Generally speaking, we begin most classes with some basic stretching, core work and fundamental drills to get you warmed up, about 15 minutes. Then the instructor will break the class up in teams of 2 and you and your partner will drill together for the majority of the class. For the next 30 minutes, the instructor will demonstrate several times a move, exercise or combo (depending on whether it's BJJ, Muay Thai or MMA) and you and your partner will drill on each other that move/exercise/combo until he's confident that you both have the move down. He will then teach the next set of moves and continue this process of repetition until 15 minutes of class is leftover. The majority of the class is educational and your partner is not resisting you so you're able to learn the moves. So for the last 15 minutes of class you and your partner will roll/spar more competitively to increase reaction time and practice moves in a more life-like scenario.

What should I wear?
Bring flip flops or slip-in shoes since you will be barefoot the entire time. We do not allow bare feet off the mats for hygiene purposes, so it's important to have something you can slip in and out of to go to the bathroom and such. Regular work out clothes are fine but fitted gear is preferred.*
*BJJ No Gi - Really baggy clothes are difficult to work around, because this is a close contact sport. Compression shirts, rash guards or fitted shirts are recommended. Leggings or shorts with a drawstring work well. Baggy shorts are fine if you don't mind giving people a peep show...
*BJJ with a Gi - First off... the Gi is the Robe-like outfit you see often in martial arts. We will supply you with a "rental" Gi your first class or 2. The above attire works well underneath the GI.
*Muay Thai - Any workout clothes are fine. Most people wear shorts, leggings and a t-shirt or tank top.

Absolutely. We have several success stories at our gym where people have lost over 100 pounds.
What if I'm not physically fit... do I need to get fit before I try your classes out?
Absolutely not. Most people who are not fit, are not fit because they don't like the monotony or working out, running or lifting weights. The reason we have so many success stories is because this is a fun way to lose weight and become more conditioned. You go at your own pace and your inner eagerness to get better will fuel the competitiveness inside of you and push you past what you thought your limits were.

How old does my child have to be to start?
Typically we like to start kids at 4 or 5 years old. We recommend that you bring your child in and let us assess whether they are ready or not. While some students start at 4 because of their size and eagerness to start, but we've also recommended that they wait another year.

I want to learn self-defense, why is this combination of martial arts more effective than Karate & Tae Kwon Do?
BJJ and Muay Thai are the most effective forms of self-defense in the world. So much that they make up 90% of the skill-set of most fighters in the UFC (The most prestigious Mixed Martial Arts fighting competition in the world). Every single one of the moves/combos we teach, we can execute in a fast, life-like situation where the opponent is NOT cooperating. We take everything into consideration... we even have students that are missing limbs, and we teach them how to modify the move to suit their needs.

How long will it take me to get my black belt?
Very complicated question... We can't tell you how often we hear "My son is a black belt in Tae Kwon do and he's only 8!" ... In the BJJ community, it is important we don't give any student (adult or child) a false sense of security, which is why no child will receive their black belt before the age of 19 years old, IBJJF rules. Click here to view the IBJJF Belt Ranking System
If a child starts at 5 years old and continues training regularly AND participates in competitions, it is likely they should receive their black belt before age 25, but it is up to the professor to make this decision. We do however promote them through a separate color system to make sure they stay encouraged, see below.
As an adult, if you train regularly, come to open mat, and compete, it should take anywhere from 10-20 years.
Basic IBJJF belt rank in order below shows everyone starts as a white belt. If you're under the age of 15, you may go through 4 more colors. If you are over 15 years old you will start at white, earn 4 stripes and then earn blue, then purple, etc.
